"NO" BOXES

2016

People always get a very nice output from machines after they give machines a certain order: rotating the knob to get the volume up, turning on the switch to light up the lamp… I’m thinking of what if machines act in a totally opposite way after they get ordered?

These are boxes act in a totally opposite way after they get ordered.

Useless Inventions

I’ve observed several kinds of actions how people always give “input” to machines in daily life:

  • turn on/ off a switch to turn on/off something

  • rotate to make something tight/ loose

  • slide/rotate/keep on clicking to add/reduce variable

  • click to get a new window

  • swipe to delete or to get more info

  • split to see something (open a book)

  • make a fist to make something shrink

  • swing to get off something

  • come closer to obtain something

And try to make machine react oppositely after people take actions above.

BOX A: Turn off the light as soon as people turn it on?
BOX B: Volume down when people wanna volume up?
BOX C: A fan stop working and tilt back when people coming close?

After the first round play test, someone told me that they can not understand what happened with the BOX C. Because fan are not supposed to change its working state when people coming closer, the reaction of BOX C makes no sense.

I adjust my idea of BOX C : Kicking off the ball when people want to put it at the empty place at end of a ball array. (Since people like to make a balance.)
